A lightsaber is not a gu10 bulb but a fictional weapon that exists in the Star Wars universe, a kind of laser sword. The sword is 1.33 metres long and consists of a blade of light attached to a metal hilt. The lightsaber belongs to the Jedi order and their Sith companions, both using them for combat or to deflect blaster bolts. The lightsaber first appeared in the very first Star Wars film, released in 1977, and has appeared subsequently in every Star Wars movie to date. After surveying 2,000 film fans in 2008 it emerged that the lightsaber is history’s most popular film weapon.
There are almost no substances that the lightsaber cannot cut through except other lightsabers although in the Expanded Universe some saber-proof materials have been developed. When a lightsaber makes contact with flesh, it leaves behind a cauterized wound in the flesh. Lightsabers emanate a distinctive hum when they are activated which increases in volume and pitch as the blade moves quickly through the air. When a lightsaber comes into contact with another lightsaber or an object, a loud crackle is produced.
